Logging into the Appliance Dashboard

Introduction

The Appliance Dashboard acts as an access point into the data stored within your network appliance. The data available via this here is read only but provides more granular details about your organization’s endpoints and network capture data.

Network Appliance variants

There are several variants of network appliance:

  • Physical: the physical appliance that was installed into your infrastructure while deploying Field Effect.
  • Virtual, self-hosted: these virtual appliances are those hosted within your own virtual environment. More technical expertise is expected from your organization for this type of deployment.
  • Virtual, Field Effect-hosted: if you opted for the virtual appliance during your deployment, the appliance is virtualized and hosted by Field Effect. Reasons for choosing a virtual appliance vary depending on the organization. Please note, network packet capture is not available when using a Field Effect hosted appliance, only endpoint data.

Logging into a Physical Appliance

Before logging into your physical appliance, it’s important to note that you can only log into the appliance from the same network as the appliance. So, if the appliance you want to log into is installed in your headquarters, you must also be logged into your headquarters’ network (examples: On-site, via VPN, etc.).

Logging into the physical appliance is similar to logging into the Field Effect MDR Portal, using the same credentials. To log into a physical appliance, begin by navigating to the appliance’s IP address in your internet browser. If you are unsure of your appliance’s IP address, feel free to contact support@fieldeffect.com to get the appliance’s IP address.

When adding your IP address into your browser’s address bar, you will be taken to the Appliance Dashbboard’s login page. To login to your specific appliance, use the same credentials as you would to access the Field Effect Portal.

After logging in, you will be directed to the Dashboard’s home page. All the information you are viewing is stored in the appliance for analytics and is read only.

Logging into a Self-Hosted Virtual Appliance

If you are logging into a virtual appliance that’s self-hosted, the process is the same as logging into a physical appliance: navigate to the self-hosted appliance’s IP address in your internet browser and log in with your portal credentials. If you are unsure of your appliance’s IP address, contact support@fieldeffect.com to get the appliance’s IP address.

You also need to be connected to same network as the self-hosted appliance (examples: On-site, via VPN, etc.).

Download the VPN Configuration

To log into a virtual appliance that is being hosted by Field Effect, you will need to log into a VPN connection that is specific to your appliance. The VPN configuration for your Field Effect-hosted virtual appliance will be available in the MDR Portal's Downloads page

If you do not use a Field Effect-hosted virtual appliance, you will not see any VPN configurations on the Downloads page. Download the VPN config for your organization.

With this configuration, you will need to upload it to your preferred VPN tool.

Add the Configuration to your VPN Tool

Currently, our configuration file is only supported by the WireGuard VPN tool, which can be downloaded here (https://www.wireguard.com/install).

After installing WireGuard, you will need to add the VPN tunnel configuration file you downloaded from the MDR Portal.

Click +Add Tunnel and browse to the VPN configuration file you downloaded from the MDR Portal. Once added, you can use it to connect to our hosted domain. Below is an example of the Field Effect VPN tunnel in WireGuard.

After you have added the VPN tunnel, connect to it using your chosen VPN tool. Once connected, navigate to covalence.fieldeffect.net

You will be taken to the login page. To access your virtual appliance, use the same login credentials as you would to access the Field Effect Portal.

After logging in, you will be directed to the Appliance Dashboard's home page. All the information you are viewing is stored in the appliance for analytics and is read only.
